Mateo makes a decision

Would you tell your grandchildren the whole story of your biggest deal?

In Chapter 6, THE PRESSURE THAT REVEALS HIS PURPOSE, Mateo is weighing a settlement after an injury at his apartment complex. He has sued Caleb, the entrepreneur. Caleb has approached him, against their attorneys’ counsel.

Mateo’s daughter sees what a larger payout could mean for her girls’ college funds. She urges her father to fight for a large payout.

Mateo wants to help his granddaughters, too.

He’s also thinking about what his granddaughters will learn from the way he handles the decision.

“I want them to be proud—not just of what we got, but of how we got it.”

In real estate, I spend a lot of time asking whether the numbers work.

Mateo’s words remind me to ask a question before I sign: If I told my grandchildren about this deal, would I be proud to tell them what I said and did when the deal was on the line?

Think of a business decision you’d tell the next generation about.

What would you want them to learn from the way you handled it?
